El nuevo sol de R.E.M.
“Rapid
Eye Movement” son las palabras que se esconden tras
las siglas de R.E.M. La banda de Athens, Georgina, es sin
duda una de las mejores de la historia. Ellos son John Michael
Stipe, Peter Buck y Mike Millis.

“Leaving New York”, es el primer single de Around
the sun.
Se trata de un disco marcado profundamente por la recién
situación política de los Estados Unidos.
Michel Stipe, vocalista de R.E.M, no ha ocultado su rechazo
hacia la guerra y hacia el gobierno de su país.
“Para bien o para mal, el estado actual del mundo ha
tenido una gran influencia en mis letras.
Nuestro disco no será en absoluto deprimente, porque
incluso la canción más triste contendrá
un poquito de esperanza pero éste va a ser un disco
muy intenso y con un mensaje bastante comprometido políticamente
diría yo”, declaró.
“Around the sun” es el disco número 21
de su carrera musical, esta cifra incluye sus álbumes
de estudio, disco en directo, bandas sonoras y su reciente
disco recopilatorio “In time:the best of R.E.M”
y cuenta tonadas calmadas, guitarras domadas, melodías
de cierta belleza con hegemonía sónica acústica
y tendencias “dejavu”, predominantemente folk
y jangle pop.
Sobre este nuevo disco, Michel Stipe comenta, “posiblemente
sea la colección de 13 canciones más eclécticas
que hayamos juntado. Sin duda sorprenderá a nuestros
fans y puede que cause sensación en los demás”.
Entre los 13 temas del álbum se incluye una versión
nueva del tema “Final Straw”.
Aparte del primer “single” el disco trae otras
canciones destacables tales como “Afttermath”,
“Boy in the well”, “Electron blue” y
“The outsider”, que cuenta con la colaboración
del rapero Q-Tip de A Tribe Called Quest y Deee-lite.
Otras colaboraciones del disco corren a cargo de Scott MacCaughey
(The young Freshfellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies)
y la comentada de Bill Reiflin (Ministry).
El disco fue grabado en tres estudios distintos y en dos
etapas, ya que el proceso se interrumpió para publicar
el de grandes éxitos “In time”, (octubre
2003). Y para la gira mundial del mismo año.
La primera parte de la grabación se llevó
acabo en Vancouver, Canadá para luego trasladarse
a latitudés más tropicales.
El estudio Compass Poin (Nassau) en las islas Bahamas y
en The Hit Factory/Criteria Studios de Miami.
Y la masterización del resultado final se llevó
a cabo en los estudios de Sterling Sound en Nueva York.
